Supporting the sustainable development goals

This week marks Global Goals week – a campaign to accelerate action that will progress the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a set of targets unanimously agreed by all United Nations Member States in 2015, with the aim of delivering peace and prosperity for people and the planet. The 17 goals cover a huge range of social, economic and environmental issues from hunger and health to climate action, gender equality and democracy.

Each of the 17 goals has a set of sub-indicators, which are essentially targets to measure progress against each of the headline issues represented. The target date set for delivering these targets was 2030, but whilst we are well past the half way mark in terms of timing, progress is significantly behind where it needs to be. That is where global goals week comes into play, providing new focus and awareness to accelerate action and spark new initiatives to progress the goals.

True food is a great example of an organisation that lives the values of the SDGs by championing local and ethical suppliers, adopting its zero waste philosophy and putting the community at its heart. Whilst the shop supports a range of the goals, it aligns especially closely to the following ones:

  • SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth – championing small local producers to support the local economy.
  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities – selecting brands who put ethical practice in the supply chain front and centre.
  • SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production – offering food and household refills to cut plastic, support the circular economy and reduce food waste.
  • SDGs 13, 14 & 15: Climate action, Life below water & Life on Land – supporting producers who use organic and regenerative farming practices to support biodiversity and manage the climate crisis. Reducing waste to reduce pollution of land and marine environments.

So this global goals week maybe take the chance to tell someone new about True Food, and demonstrate that our power as consumers can go further than you might think!
