Wholemeal soda bread

Soda bread

This simple loaf is much quicker to prepare than conventional bread, and is the perfect accompaniment to hearty soups and stews that might be on your menu as the weather turns colder!

Ingredients

  • 300g wholemeal spelt flour
  • 300g wholemeal bread (strong) flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp yogurt
  • 1tsp lemon juice
  • 450ml tepid water to mix

Method

  • Heat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius or 180 degrees fan
  • Mix the dry ingredients, then combine all the wet ingredients into a jug.
  • If you are kneading by hand, using one hand in the mixing bowl and the other on the jug pour in the liquid mixture and stir until you have a loose dough. Otherwise use an electric mixer and add the liquid gradually whilst the mixer is running.
  • Kneed lightly until the mixture is well combined into a smooth dough.
  • If you are using a tin, oil it generously and place the dough into the tin. Otherwise form the dough into a rough ball and place onto a lined baking tray.
  • Bake in the oven for about 40 minutes, until the loaf is golden and it sounds hollow when tapped!
